Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s):
The Queensland Government has registered a number of training organisations (ie. TAFE institutes and private training providers) to provide training for apprentices and trainees. Once a registered training organisation is chosen to become part of an apprenticeship or traineeship, it then becomes the ‘supervising registered training organisation’ and works with the employer and Australian apprentice to develop a training plan. SRTO’s have the following roles and responsibilities:
provide induction information when required
develop a training plan and training record
assess employer’s capacity to meet requirements of apprenticeship or traineeship
role under the Australian Quality Training Framework – assessment and issue of qualification
deliver additional learning support if required – for example, help with maths, reading or writing skills
advise on the cost of training

Group Training Organisations (GTO’s):
A group training organisation is a not-for-profit entity established predominately to provide training and employment opportunities.

Group training organisations employ apprentices and trainees and are responsible for ensuring that those employees receive suitable training and experience. To achieve this aim, the group training organisation will find a suitable 'host' employer for each apprentice or trainee to work with on a day-to-day basis.

Businesses can choose to become a ‘host’ employer, the GTO will take on all the legal responsibilities of having a Australian Apprentice which will allow you to focus on your core business.

Apprentices and trainees employed by group training organisations may spend their entire apprenticeship or traineeship with one host employer who can offer them a well-rounded training experience. Alternatively, they may be rotated around a number of employers who can each offer a specialised area of training.

Employers who may not otherwise have been able to employ an apprentice or trainee have an opportunity to participate in the training system by hosting an apprentice or trainee for a nominated period of time.

Using a Group Training Organisation is one option for businesses to consider when taking on an apprentice or trainee. To find out more about which Group Training Companies are available in your region, contact us.
